UK- Fish and Chips, Friends and Fun!
LONDON & BRISTOL UK
As our Icelandic adventure of gas station hot dogs, hot springs and waterfalls came
to and end, another began! We arrived at Heathrow and were a short subway ride from
our hotel. A splurge night in the London city center, directly in the Piccadilly Circus. We
had a view of the street performers from our room. The change from roughing it in the
camper van to a fancy hotel in the center of London was pretty stark… and definitely
enjoyable.
Since we were in the theater district, we decided to book tickets for the Book of Mormon
at the Price of Wales Theater. It was an evening of irreverent laughs! After the first night
we changed into a “capsule” hostel where your bunk is fully enclosed with a curtain. It is
a little more than a standard hostel, but way less than a hotel.
We spent the rest of our time in London exploring the different shops and markets,
walking around the Buckingham Palace and seeing some of the free museums. London
is definitely an expensive city and the Pound was strong compared to the dollar, making
it even more painful! Luckily we had a bus booked to take us out of the capitol and into
Bristol to visit Lindsey’s friends Chelsea and Paco.
Bristol is like the little quirky, funky, hipster sister of London. London has Buckingham
Palace, Bristol has Banksy, we will let you decide which you prefer. Bristol has
(mostly beautiful) street art (graffiti) on most walls, many bars, cafes, second hand
shops, GREAT fish and chips, parks and friendly faces almost every corner you turn.
It also has a river and a harbor area. Our friends Chelsea and Paco showed us all the
neat nooks and crannys of the city.
Our first evening we had burgers on a boat restaurant on the river, followed by drinks
and good music at downtown bar called Kongs, we played the Mortal Combat arcade
game, danced a bit and maybe even let loose with a shot of tequila (or two…). The
next day we had to cure the mini hangover by taking a nice long walk to see all of the
sights like the Bristol Clifton Suspension Bridge and by having the best fish ‘n chips in
all of the UK, in our opinion! The following day we had a wonderful breakfast in a
laundromat, walked around the harbor, found some more Banksy art, and then we
prepared to be up early the next morning to head to the airport.
Bittersweet. It would be a lie if I said the best part of our Bristol trip was the delicious food,
street art, or beautiful views…. the best part was getting to spend time with two good
friends, catch up, and rebuild the connections. We have to give a major shout out to
Chelsea and Paco for their hospitality, and kindness- THANK YOU, YOU BOTH ROCK!
